We’re gearing up for Frieze Art Fair taking place in New York at Randall’s Island May 4-7, 2012.
Known for her recurrent use of industrial raw materials such as sheetrock, wood beams and cement, Virginia Overton’s sculptural practice defies notions of scale and site specificity. By creating vertiginous installations and daunting artworks that question their surroundings, she initiates a vibrant confrontation with the viewer. For Frieze New York, Overton reacts to the idyllic landscape of Randall’s Island by installing flexible mirrors among trees. Echoing Robert Smithson’s series of ‘Non-Sites’, the artist transforms a minimal, seemingly cold material into a sensual, weightless combination of nature and artificiality.
